Earth Day 2013

April 22, 2013, is the 43rd anniversary of the founding of Earth Day which marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. As in years past, the Office of Health, Safety and Security is leading DOE's coordinated Earth Week celebrations during the week of April 22nd at Forrestal and the week of April 29th at Germantown. DOE's theme for 2013 is "Earth Day, Every Day! Changing Behavior to Reduce DOE's Carbon Footprint."

This year's Earth Week at Forrestal will feature DOE offices showcasing the progress DOE is making to support clean energy and a healthy, sustainable environment as well as the following:

  • April 24th - Environmental films will be shown at Forrestal between 11-2 pm
  • April 25th - Community Day at Forrestal between 11-2 pm will consist of the following activities:
    • Music
    • Interactive displays
    • Educational games
    • Children's activities and parade
    • Environmental photo contest
    • Nature walk & talk
    • Produce farmers market
    • DOE cafeteria BBQ
    • Freebies!

Sustainable products will be showcased and UNICOR and Shred-it will be present to provide recycling of personal electronic products and shredding of personal information. Earth Week at the Germantown facility will be held the week of April 29th and will feature similar attractions and displays. As Earth Week approaches, further details will be provided here. If you have questions on Earth Week or want to get involved, please contact Beverly Whitehead at Beverly.Whitehead@hq.doe.gov or (202) 586-6073 or see our Earthday flyer.
