DOE Celebrates the 40th Earth DayOn April 22, 2010, the United States celebrates the 40th anniversary of the founding of Earth Day, which marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. DOE will be coordinating Earth Day events at both the Forrestal and Germantown locations. DOE's theme for 2010 is "Earth Day, Every Day! Reducing DOE's Carbon Footprint." This year's Earth Day celebration will be the largest and most visible yet—one that incorporates and showcases the dedicated progress DOE is making to support a clean, healthy, sustainable environment. Some exciting new additions to this year's event include a formal outdoor program with live entertainment, guest speakers, interactive displays, free give-aways, energy educational games, garden walks, and "cause and effect" presentations. "Take our Sons and Daughters to Work Day" coincides with Earth Day so bring the kids too! The Department's Earth Week observance will take place at Forrestal, April 19-23 and Germantown April 26-30. The Sustainability Awards ceremony on April 22 will recognize exemplary environmental sustainability practices of DOE sites. DOE will also host a pavilion on the National Mall April 22-25 in conjunction with the Earth Day Network's celebration. Look for more information in an upcoming DOE Cast or contact Beverly Whitehead (HS-22) at Beverly.Whitehead@hq.doe.gov or (202) 586-6073. Come do your part for Earth Day and join the fun!
