DOE/EH-0410 --- Issue No. 94-11 --- 09/94

Hoisting and Rigging Safety Training

Hoisting and rigging is one of the most inherently dangerous, yet easily overlooked, activities within the Department of Energy (DOE). In the last several years, there have been numerous mishaps, near misses, and a fatality directly attributed to improper construction hoisting and rigging operations.

In order to assist line managers and their professional safety staffs in ensuring the safety of DOE and DOE contractor hoisting and rigging operations, the Office of Environment, Safety and Health sponsored the development of an 8-hour construction hoisting and rigging safety course, along with a related Wire Rope and Synthetic Sling Workshop. Both of these training courses are being offered prior to DOE's Third Annual Occupational Safety and Health Conference in San Diego, California. The Construction Hoisting and Rigging Safety Training Workshop will be held on Monday, October 24, 1994, and the Wire Rope and Synthetic Sling Workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 1994.

Construction Hoisting and Rigging Safety Workshop - October 24, 1994

In this 1-day workshop participants will learn current hoisting and rigging issues, safety and health concerns, and standards applicable to the construction industry. The course focus will be on mobile crane and rigging operations, current safety issues and responsibilities, as well as lessons learned from across the DOE complex. The course outline and topics follow:

A. Introduction
B. Regulations/Requirements
C. Terminology
D. Mobile Crane Operation
E. Suspended Personnel Platforms
F. Rigging Operations
G. Hoists & Rigging Equipment
H. Forklifts

Wire Rope and Synthetic Sling Workshop - October 25, 1994

This 1-day workshop will provide participants with an effective knowledge and understanding of safe rigging environments. The course focuses on rigging design, identification, proper uses, inspection and lessons learned. The following topics will be covered:

A. Wire Rope Running/Standing/Slings
  1. Component Parts
  2. . Identification and Construction
  3. Handling and Installation
  4. . Inspection
  5. Applications
  6. Inspection
B. Synthetic Slings
  1. Applications
  2. Inspections
  3. Damage-Cause-Effect
  4. Identification and Construction
C. Lessons Learned

Registration Information

Both workshops will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel, 7450 Hazard Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92108-9607. Early registration is recommended, since each workshop is limited to the first 50 registrants.
