DOE/EH-0399 --- Issue No. 94-09 --- 08/94

Inaugural Meeting of Confined Space Entry Working Group

A meeting of the Confined Space Entry Working Group is scheduled prior to the Department of Energy (DOE) Third Annual Occupational Safety and Health Conference. The group's purpose is to raise the standard of safety in confined space entry by sharing information, technology, and programs from contractor to contractor.

Confined Space Entry Model Program at K-25;

The Occupational Safety and Health Worker Protection Pilot (OSHWPP) program chose the Oak Ridge K-25 program as one of its four models because of its overall distinction and excellent attention to detail. A portion of the Confined Space Entry Working Group session will be devoted to a summary of the K-25 program, including a Q&A session. The presentation will be given by Angela Arms and Ted Helms.

Other scheduled presenters include John Rekus, author of the recently published, The Complete Confined Spaces Handbook, and Don Parker, an instructor at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training Institute in Des Plaines, Illinois. Mr. Rekus has published more than 50 papers and received in 1991 the American Society of Safety Engineers' Scrivener Award. He will discuss how to identify easily overlooked hazards, which is an important subject in his book and one of particular interest to him. Mr. Parker, who will be conducting a confined space entry mini-workshop at OSHA's 49th Annual Federal Safety and Health Conference, will speak if his schedule permits.

The remaining time will be used to discuss several pre-chosen topics of general interest in confined space entry safety and an open discussion of additional topics of interest to attendees. Anyone who has a specific topic he/she would like to have included should contact Ed Patigalia at (301) 903-3972. In order to promote a free flow of ideas, an open-discussion format will be in effect for the entire meeting.

The Future of the Group

The working group will also develop the organization's charter, including the group's direction, level of interest for future meetings, and a basic schedule for those meetings.
