DOE/EH-0341 --- Issue No. 93-08 --- 10/93

DOE Hoisting and Rigging Manual

A revised edition of the DOE Hoisting and Rigging Manual has been published and is being distributed on a controlled basis. The document has been revised both in content and format. The new version is comprehensive in that it provides in one volume all applicable hoisting and rigging safety requirements, plus descriptions of good practices. Requirements listed in the Manual were drawn from a variety of both government and private sector publications. Where applicable, Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements were given precedence over other authorities.

Stand-alone sections devoted to major equipment categories make the new version of the Manual easy to use because all information required for a given equipment type is available in a single section. The revised DOE Hoisting and Rigging Manual is designed as a users' guide. It provides guidance at the "hands-on," worker's level, and can also be used by safety personnel and management to ensure that all hoisting and rigging is conducted in a safe and efficient manner. The Manual was prepared by a DOE-wide committee of individuals with hoisting and rigging expertise. It presents best practices that were chosen by evaluating the various available requirements. Other improvements in the new version include double-column printing, bolt title blocks, better graphics, and the placement of figures and illustrations closer to the appropriate text.

The new document is being distributed to those with specific needs or responsibilities related to hoising and rigging safety. It was designed as a working document, and it is distributed in a looseleaf format to accommodate changes. The revised version of the Manual is up to date with current Federal requirements and National consensus standards, making it one of the most complete guides for safe hoising and rigging operations.

Hoisting and rigging is complex and dangerous work. However, when performed by trained and competent people following the guidance provided in the DOE Hoisting and Rigging Manual, all hoisting and rigging activities can be conducted safely.
