DOE/EH-0314 --- Issue No. 93-03 --- 04/93

DOE Occupational Safety and Health Standards
Interpretations Response Line

Call 1-800-292-8061 if you need an interpretation or clarification of a DOE-prescribed occupational safety and health (OSH) standard and you work for the Department of Energy (DOE) or a DOE contractor. The DOE OSH Standards Interpretations Response Line clarifies the requirements contained in the OSH standards to promote consistent application of those standards throughout DOE.

The 800-line is a service provided by the DOE's Technical Support Division, Office of Occupational Safety, Office of Environment, Safety and Health. This dedicated phone line is available Monday through Friday between the hours 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time.

The toll-free line, an extension of the DOE Interpretations Guide to OSH Standards, provides timely processing of DOE and DOE contractor requests for clarification of OSH standards. The 800-line is staffed by OSH experienced personnel who have access to a database that contains a wealth of information on OSH standards. Most requests are answered in a single phone call. For interpretations not presently addressed in the database, responses will take longer to formulate. The goal, however, is to respond to these requests within 20 workdays. The information database used by the 800-line staff is continually updated. In addition, new interpretations are included in the quarterly updates, which are sent to registered users of the DOE Interpretations Guide to OSH Standards.

The response line provides a support service to DOE and DOE contractor staff by providing interpretations of OSH standards and program requirements, and is intended as an information resource only. It is not designed to respond to either emergencies or requests for variances from standards.

If you have any questions or require additional information, contact Ray Rogers, Office of Occupational Safety, EH-31.2, at 301-903-7331.

This Safety Note is one in a series of publications issued by EH to share occupational safety information throughout the DOE complex.
