The M-16-A2 Misfires

Recently, a number of M-16-A2 Colt carbines (model # RO 725) were reported as misfiring in the semi-automatic mode. The M-16-A2 is equipped with both an automatic, 3 round burst, mode and a semi-automatic, single shot mode. During a Transportation Safeguards Division/Courier weapons qualifications test course, several of the carbines fired two and three round bursts with the fire mode selector switch in the semi-automatic position. The weapons were pulled from the firing line and sent to Colt Industries for investigation. Colt Industries reproduced the misfiring is some, but not all, of the weapons. To ensure proper firing at all times and in all modes, Colt recommends replacing the disconnector spring (p/n 64568) with the semi disconnector spring (p/n 63026) which is used witht he AR15 models. The Transportation Safeguards Division has retrofitted 80 of its 92 M-16-A2 carbines with the intention of replacing all with the alternate disconnect spring.

The M-16-A2 rifle has not demonstrated this problem, only the carbine. However, if you have any concerns, questions or experience of "doubling" contact Brian Berger of Colt Industries, Inc., Hartford, Connecticut (203) 236-6311.
