Description

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has had a long-standing commitment to resource conservation and environmental protection. The Pollution Prevention Program has been a robust part of our environmental services since 1994. Third party verification of the environmental management system is demonstrated by registration to ISO 14001 since 2002 and membership in the EPA Performance Track Program since 2004. The performance of the environmental management system is enhanced by the grassroots support provided by staff alongside the commitment of Laboratory management to make operations related investments.

In fiscal year 2006, the Laboratory identified pollution prevention related avoidances of $4,159,500 and approximately 13,450 kg of hazardous waste. These cost savings were accomplished through a variety of activities including:

  • Mercury Thermometer Replacement
  • Chemical Inventory Management
  • Biofuel Projects
  • Electronic Equipment Stewardship
  • Staff and Community Involvement
