Lesson Learned Statement:

A roller system was utilized to remove waste from the Acid Recovery Pump Room (ARPR) clean out work area. This system enabled D&D Operators to move the containers with ease, as well as contributing to the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) concept requiring D&D personnel to spend minimum time in a radiation the area.

Discussion:

The project entailed the decontamination of the ARPR in its entirety. Decontamination efforts encompassed the removal of all loose debris from the ARPR and vacuuming the ARPR floor. Permanent utilities to the ARPR had to be isolated. The process lines within the ARPR were drained of liquids as necessary and subsequently isolated to ensure against inadvertent intrusion of additional liquids. The tank, pumps, electrical and instrumentation components, process and utility piping, HEPA filters, and miscellaneous debris were size reduced as necessary and removed from the ARPR. The final state of the ARPR is that the walls, ceiling, and floor are free of any components or equipment.

Analysis:

Waste Containers were moved from the ARPR work area through the containment area without a contamination incident. The roller system enabled D&D Operations personnel to move the containers without causing physical exertion. In addition, the use of the rollers allowed the D&D Operations personnel to spend less time in the area during this activity and therefore contributed to the ALARA concept for radiation dose reduction.
