Welcome to the Department of Energy Safety Basis Information System (SBIS) web site.

 DOE requires its contractors and operators to:

·         Analyze the work to be performed at DOE hazard category 1, 2, and 3 nuclear facilities;

·         Identify the potential hazards from that work;

·         Identify the controls necessary to protect the workers, the public, and the environment from the potential hazards.

These efforts are documented in a Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) and a set of hazard controls, such as Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs), for a facility or activity.  Together these constitute the Safety Basis for each nuclear facility.

The SBIS web site provides the status of the Safety Basis for each DOE hazard category 1, 2, or 3 nuclear facility for which a Safety Basis is required under the provisions of 10 CFR Part 830, Nuclear Safety Management.  It also provides a DOE Point of Contact for each facility or activity in the list to assist the user in determining what Safety Basis information is available and how it may be accessed.  Availability of some information may be limited if it is classified or proprietary or if it contains private information of a personal nature (such as social security numbers).  To search the database and obtain the status and contact for a particular Safety Basis, click on "Search the SBIS."

For additional information on Safety Bases go to the DOE Office of Nuclear and Facility Safety Policy web site.
