Interfaces
The Office of Nuclear and Facility Safety Policy represents DOE interests before a number of federal and
international agencies that may have oversight or regulatory jurisdiction over DOE activities or, at least,
share common regulatory problems in environment, safety and health areas. In the area of nuclear safety,
this Office interacts with the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Federal Emergency Management Administration, and the International Atomic Energy Agency to discuss and resolve issues that may impact DOE activities. Office of Nuclear and Facility Safety Policy also acts as the DOE Seismic Safety Coordinator and interacts with FEMA, the United States Geologic Survey and other agencies to establish policy and standards for seismic safety of federally owned or leased buildings consistent with federal law and executive order.
The Director of the Office of Nuclear and Facility Safety Policy acts as the DOE Standards Executive and serves
as the DOE representative on the Interagency Committee for Standards Policy (ICSP). The ICSP, chaired by the
National Institute of Standards and Technology, ensures that federal agencies establish policy and processes to adopt or develop nongovernment or government standards which are consistent with law and governmental policy. These standards policies and processes are established in DOE and are coordinated through the DOE Technical Standards Program.
