Nuclear Sites Map
DOE nuclear operations are mostly divided between
nuclear weapons stockpile maintenance, research and
environmental cleanup. The operations are performed
within several different facilities supporting nuclear
reactor operations, nuclear research, weapons disassembly,
maintenance and testing, hot cell operations, nuclear
material storage and processing and waste disposal.
Each nuclear facility is characterized by the level
of hazard they present to the public and workers from
the amount and type of nuclear materials present at
the facility.
- Hazard Category 1 is assigned to the
most hazardous facilities, for example nuclear reactors,
that could have a significant impact on the public;
- Hazard Category 2 is assigned when the potential safety impact is to workers within a site boundary; and
- Hazard Category 3 is assigned to the least hazardous facilities where the potential safety impact is to workers within a facility.
