Welcome
The Office of Health, Safety and Security (HSS) was created
to bring the vital Department of Energy (DOE) corporate functions
of health, safety, environment, and security together under
one office. To ensure effective coordination of these functions,
HSS focuses on policy development, technical assistance, education
and training, enforcement, and independent oversight programs.
To provide consistency across the Department, HSS maintains
a close working relationship with the National Nuclear Security
Administration (NNSA), the Under Secretaries of Energy and
Science, line managers, and the Department's field sites.

AUGUST HSS MESSAGE
Over the past year, the Office of Health, Safety and Security (HSS) has made significant strides in reforming elements of the Department's safety and security programs, consistent with the Deputy Secretary's End-State Vision for Safety and Security Reform. These efforts have already begun to yield definitive benefits to both HSS and Department of Energy (DOE) line management. This edition of the HSS Message highlights our progress on these elements. Get Heart Healthy!
A Message From
the Chief Health, Safety and Security Officer
The health of Department of Energy employees has been one of the Office of Health, Safety and Security‘s (HSS) highest priorities since it was established in 2006. Nevertheless, heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and remains the single greatest threat to the Department's most important asset – YOU. We all know someone who suffers from heart disease. In the past year, we have lost a number of Department of Energy employees to fatal heart attacks, either at the office or at home. On a more personal level, these employees were also our friends. These tragic losses have prompted us to redouble our efforts to increase awareness among both the Department’s employees and employers about health issues in general and heart disease in particular.
The disability and death associated with heart disease continues to affect our population and our workforce at a rate that is disturbing, particularly when you consider that many of the risk factors associated with heart disease can be effectively reduced if you have the right information and both medical and social support. To this end, we have issued a short brochure that summarizes some of the most important information for easy reference. A more comprehensive heart health report is also available to increase your understanding and awareness of heart disease, especially the risk factors that we can all influence to improve our continued heart health. We encourage you to share this information with your coworkers, your friends, and especially your family. No matter who you are or what your job is, we want you to know that we value and support your "heart health".
The brochure and report are available on the HSS website at:

If you have any questions about this report or have suggestions as to how HSS can better support the heart health of our workers, please contact Dr. Michael Ardaiz, the Department's Chief Medical Officer, at (202) 586-8758 or at Michael.Ardaiz@hq.doe.gov.

Safety Basis Information System Now Available to DOE and Contractors
HSS announces deployment of a redesigned Safety Basis Information System (SBIS). The new SBIS will enhance DOE's ability to monitor the safety basis status of high-hazard nuclear facilities and ensure that these facilities operate under current nuclear safety requirements, which includes the appropriate use of Justifications for Continued Operations. The new SBIS will also provide the public with access to up-to-date reports of the safety basis status for each DOE nuclear facility designated as hazard category 1, 2, or 3 per Appendix A to Subpart B of the DOE Nuclear Safety Management Rule, 10 CFR 830. HS-30 partnered with the DOE/NNSA field element points of contact in updating the accuracy of the database.
Links to the SBIS database, the public report, and the SBIS registration page for DOE federal and contractor employees are available on the Safety Basis Information System page on the HSS Nuclear Safety website. Questions concerning the SBIS may be directed to Glenn S. Searfoss, HS-32 Office of Analysis, at (301) 903-8085.
