OSHA ANNOUNCES NATIONAL TARGETED INSPECTION PLAN

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced their Targeted Inspection Plan for 2006. The inspection plan focuses on high-hazard worksites as determined by injury and illness rate data.
According to OSHA, the plan provides for -

a decrease in the number of low injury and illness rate establishments that are on their inspection list; and

ensures that inspection policies and plans are accessible to all interested parties
The list includes those worksites which have high injury and illness rates as compared to similar industries and operations. The reasoning behind the list is very simple. OSHA does not have unlimited resources and funding, and therefore must carefully target their resources. OSHA states that the goal is to target enforcement efforts where it will have the most benefit for workers and employers.

The plan sets specific selection criteria and then lists those establishments which have been selected. It also permits local field office managers to "defer" a planned inspection of a workplace for up to 75 days if the establishment is in the process of applying for OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) and in those situations were an establishment is currently participating in OSHA's VPP; it will be deleted from the inspection list.
