[DOE LETTERHEAD]
National Nuclear Security Administration
November 1, 2006
The Honorable A. J. Eggenberger
Chairman
Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board
625 Indiana Avenue, NW, Suite 700
Washington, D.C. 20004-2901
Dear Mr. Chairman:
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) completed a review to identify standards and other documents that may need revision in conjunction with the update of the NNSA Functions, Responsibilities and Authorities Manual. This review was conducted to fulfill a commitment from our July 25, 2006 letter. The review focused on two areas: 1) accurate reflection of NNSA organizational roles and responsibilities and, 2) completeness in specifying unique NNSA safety responsibilities.
The review identified no technical standards, but four other documents (three guides and one manual) need revision to adequately reflect NNSA roles and responsibilities. The review also identified several other documents that need to be either revised or deleted because they are out of date or obsolete. A table listing all documents needing revision or deletion along with the reasons for required action is enclosed. NNSA is working with appropriate Department of Energy organizations to assist in the completion of these actions.
If you have any questions please contact me directly or have your staff contact Lynn Maestas at (505) 845-6388 or Rabi Singh at (301) 903-5864.
Sincerely,
Thomas
