Chairman

Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board

Washington, D.C. 20004-2901

Dear Mr. Chairman:

Your November 3, 2004, letter regarding Recommendation 2000-2, Configuration Management, Vital Safety Systems, requested several assessments and deliverable documents at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL).  The final deliverable was:

To complete this deliverable, the Livermore Site Office (LSO) worked with LLNL to produce the enclosed Nuclear Materials Technology Program (NMTP) Configuration Management Resource-Loaded Schedule.

The NMTP schedule defines a series of activities that must be completed in order for CM to be fully implemented within the SuperBlock (Buildings 239, 331, 332, and 334).  The discrete activities include the development of procedures and drawings, definition of CM business processes and implementation of a CM database.  LLNL is also developing a Project Execution Plan and Risk Management Plan to supplement the enclosed CM schedule.  Additionally, LLNL will incorporate this schedule into the NMTP Master Schedule and will provide a monthly status of the CM schedule to LSO.

NNSA believes the schedule is achievable and will hold LLNL accountable for meeting the schedule.  LSO has committed to closely monitoring the progress made on the schedule milestones and goals.

If you have any questions, please contact me or have your staff contact Mike Thompson of my office at (301) 903-5648 or Sarah E. Spagnolo at (925) 423-3250.

Sincerely,

Linton F. Brooks
