Dear Mr. Chairman:
This letter is in response to
the Board staff report received on March 28, 2005, concerning electrical and
lightning protection systems at the Nevada Test Site. Enclosed is a memorandum from the Nevada Site
Office (NSO) that forwards a response to issues at the Ula Complex, the Device
Assembly Facility (DAF), G-Tunnel, site-wide lightning detection and
protection, and the Radioactive Waste Management Complex (RWMC). Also included with the package are (1) an Implementation Plan that provides information to
set overall disposition finding priorities, including G-Tunnel and (2) an
analysis of historical data for site-wide lightning detection and protection to
confirm existing alert distances, as requested by the Board staff report. NSO will also address the issue of lightning
protection during transport operations within the G-Tunnel.
If you have any questions please
contact me or have your staff contact Mike Thompson at
