[DOE LETTERHEAD]
May 8, 2003
The Honorable John T. Conway
Chairman
Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board
625 Indiana Avenue, NW, Suite 700
Washington, D.C. 20004-2901
Dear Mr. Chairman:
The purpose of this letter is to report that
on May 5, 2003, the Department began shipments of depleted uranium (DU)
material from Savannah River Site (SRS) to Envirocare of Utah. These shipments are part of the overall plan
for the disposition of the DU material in storage at SRS that was described in
my letter to you of September 30, 2002.
The shipments were originally scheduled to begin in March 2003. Some delays were encountered in the March
start in order to ensure proper shipping documentation and handling; however,
the September 2003 completion date is expected to be met.
If you have any further questions, please
call me at (202) 586-7709 or Mr. Paul Golan at (202) 586-0738.
Sincerely,
Jessie Hill Roberson
Assistant Secretary for
