[DOE LETTERHEAD]

OAK RIDGE OPERATIONS OFFICE

October 3, 2003

The Honorable John T. Conway

Chairman

Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board

625 Indiana Avenue, NW

suite700

Washington, D.C.

Dear Mr. Chairman:

In your August 14, 2003, letter to the Department of Energy (DOE), you requested the Office of Environmental Management (EM) and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to identify whether any High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtered ventilation systems exist for the protection of personnel who must shelter or continue operations in nuclear or non-nuclear facilities (including emergency operations centers) following an accident in a nearby nuclear facility.

On September 17, 2003, Ms. Jesse Roberson, EM-l, provided a response to you, but the facilities she addressed did not include the EM facilities at the Oak Ridge Operations Office.  We do not have any EM facilities that have a HEPA filtered ventilation system for the protection of personnel who must shelter or continue operations.  We do have an Emergency Operations Center at an EM site, the East Tennessee Technology Park (ETTP).  This facility is being addressed in the response from NNSA.

If you have any further questions, please call me at (865) 576-444.

Sincerely,

Gerald G. Boyd

Manager
