DOE Order requires the Security Survey Program to conduct surveys to assure that safeguards and security (S&S) interests and activities are protected at the required level. In addition, surveys provide a basis for line management to make decisions regarding S&S programs implementation activities, including allocation of resources, acceptance of risk and mitigation of vulnerabilities. Surveys also identify S&S program strengths and weaknesses. There are four types of surveys. An Initial Survey must be conducted for facilities where there will be a facility clearance established. Periodic Surveys are then conducted at predetermined frequencies. Special Surveys are conducted at facilities for specific limited purposes and finally Termination Surveys are conducted to verify the termination of Departmental activities and appropriate disposition of S&S interests.
