Mission and Functions
Mission
The Office of Safety Training conducts on-going job analysis, and develops
and delivers training in all aspects of safety required for the operation of the Department of Energy.
The Office maintains the proficiency and competency of Departmental and NNSA safety professionals
through standardized safety training, education, and professional development.
Functions
- Provides and manages subject matter expertise for the development and review of DOE safety training and awareness courses.
- Develops and provides safety-related training for the DOE complex, establishes core training standards, and promotes the professional development of DOE employees.
- Represents the Department in government-wide forums on building, recruiting, developing and retaining a highly qualified safety professional workforce.
- Analyzes and develops implementation strategies and plans for recruitment, retention, and career development of safety human capital assets DOE-wide.
- Coordinates the Federal Technical Capabilities Program and assures that program requirements and processes are appropriate and incorporated into the design and delivery of NTC safety training curriculum.
- Maintains current information on best safety practices, Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, new or revised engineered safety systems, and findings and conclusions of third-party safety overseers, including the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) to ensure that the NTC safety curriculum reflects up-to-date principles and practices.
- Provides specified training and support services to other DOE and government organizations on a space available and full cost recovery basis.
- Consults and coordinates with standard-setting organizations to obtain and maintain certification and accreditation of NTC safety training courses.
