EFCOG/DOE CHEMICAL SAFETY MANAGEMENT 2000 WORKSHOP

The Chemical Safety Topical Committee (CSTC) was held its Joint Chemical Safety Management 2000 Workshop at the DOE Forrestal building in Washington, D.C., on October 24-26, 2000.

The main theme of the Workshop was The Path Forward to Chemical Safety Management Program Excellence. The Workshop goal was to examine the status of DOE chemical safety management programs within the Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS) framework and to promote their improvement through the incorporation of ISMS principles. Discussions centered on issues of common interest to identify lessons learned and best practices for use in continued long-term improvement of chemical safety management programs DOE-wide.

This Workshop will broght together line managers responsible for chemical safety, safety professionals and appropriate representatives from DOE Operations and Field Offices and DOE contractors. Participants will identify and address their common chemical safety needs and concerns, share their experiences and achievements over the past year and work together to formulate future plans and CSTC projects for the coming year.

A highlight of the Workshop was the introduction of the new Chemical Management Program (CMP) Handbook and its use in creating good CMPs under Integrated Safety Management (ISM). Two round table discussions  featured reports from the field on how ISM principles are being addressed in DOE Chemical Management Programs and on approaches to chemical safety analysis at DOE.
